![]() This is clearly shown by the interest of Royals such as Elisabeth (“Sissi”) from Austria for the mythology and archaeology of Kerkyra or the funding of the Olympia Excavations by the German Kaiser. Archaeology in the 19th century also was an Elite business as it was investigating elite sites. Koumanoudis were protagonists before the excavation was handed over to the German Archaeological Institute in Athens, where Alfred Brueckner became the first archaeologist working for the GAI there from 1914. In the Kerameikos excavation, the famous Greek archaeologists Athanasios Rhousopoulos and Stefanos A. Archaeological fieldwork in Greece was formed during the 19th century, and it was coined by great men: Ernst Curtius excavated at Olympia, Heinrich Schliemann at Troy, Mycene and Orchomenos, Wilhelm Dörpfeld at Olympia, Carl Blegen at Pylos and Troy and Humfry Payne at Perachora. Matters of Gender in the history of the Kerameikos excavation cannot be seen and understood without the overall background of the development of archaeological research in Greece. This paper tries to question and understand the relationships between space and gender and will approach how space can be constructed in prehistory as well as how gender can be constructed in our understanding of past architectures. Lastly, I finish by concluding that the recent approaches to construction, to the use of space, and to the materials and contexts, including burials and engravings, seem to be telling us something about the construction of collective identities in prehistory, namely the concepts of fragmentation and ambiguity. I also present some examples of human burials in walled enclosures and anthropomorphic representations from late prehistory to question the fragmentation of the body and the ambiguity of the images. First, I examine the idea of material space relations and gender through the work of the architect Peg Rawes and the philosopher Luce Irigaray, before presenting examples from Portuguese Chalcolithic walled enclosures, where gender roles are dependent on the interpretations of the built space, and the specific case study of Castanheiro do Vento, to question the fragmented character of these constructed spaces. ![]() This paper aims to talk about the relationships between gender and space.
